In my current work I have been concentrating
on scenes taken from urban environments in major cities including
London, New York, San Francisco and Sydney. My main subject matter
includes monumental and landmark structures, such as bridges and
large buildings.
My work depicts the beauty and grace inherent in these buildings
and structures, which are often neglected and allowed to deteriorate,
or alternatively are overlooked as being part of the more mundane
aspects of city architecture.
To convey an atmosphere of a specific time and place, I use techniques
involving light and deep shadow, with compositions that mirror the
solid nature of these structures.
The viewers’ attention is drawn to these structures, which
are often left to decay before being pulled down to make way for
more condos or office space, for example the many old cinemas in
San Francisco. The viewer is forced to reconsider these structures
that they often take for granted, as a reminder of what is so close
to being lost forever in the push for blandness and modernity.
I have been working primarily in the Monotype and Monoprint mediums.
The spontaneity of mark making enables me to work unhindered by
more complex printmaking methods, and to concentrate on textures
and the overlaying of inks to create deep saturated colors and marks.
